The Simple Garden

I ventured through my French doors to my small outdoor courtyard area today to check on my cacti garden, only to find that one of the plants had tragically perished. That’s right. I killed a cactus.  The ridiculous hail storm that befell Dallas recently may have contributed to its passing, but I’m sure that weeks of inattention did not help. I have long since come to the realization that I do not have a green thumb, but cacti are supposed to be tough and resilient.  Clearly they are no match for me.  As I now either need to go plant shopping (yet again) or settle on a rock garden, I started browsing for ideas online.  This amazing arid garden in Marrakesh Morocco created by designer Esther Gutmer and architect Helena Marczewsk definitely caught my attention.

Then reality kicked in, and I remembered that I did not have glass walls – nor do I have a space that I could possibly transform into anything that even comes close to this.  Unfortunately, I got distracted again when I came across this great company out of Austin, TX called Articulture Designs.  The company focuses on sustainable designs, living walls, and interior plant projects. Here are some samples of their work.

The tabletop designs by Articulture Designs would make great hostess gifts. Regrettably, I don’t think these would be right for my outdoor garden and the living walls that the company assembles would not live long at my place. I’m not a huge fan of artificial plants, but I these succulent sculptures by Waterstone Succulents out of Houston, TX are really pretty.  Plus, they may be the only kind of plants I can’t kill…
Need this!

Simply Walled

Tracy Hiner of Black Crow Studios is pushing the envelope with large-scale, jaw-dropping wallpaper murals.  Designed to be a continuous, non-repetitive installation, this art-like creation is an impressive alternative to traditional wallpaper.  In a brilliant collaboration with watercolor productions from Karla Davison and viewfinder photography by Alysia Cotter (among others)  these works are meant to make a bold design statement.  All designs are also offered as canvas prints for those that are not yet ready to venture into the realm of artistically-papered walls.

Firmly Planted

For those of you that would rather do your gardening indoors instead of braving the scorching summer heat, planters are the way to go.  Hot this season are mini planters. Brides everywhere have been using mini planters at weddings for years, but these little guys are making it past the honeymoon period and are here to stay. More and more retail companies and Etsy stores are adding trendy miniature planters to their housewares lines. If your home is in need of a little vegetation, consider adding a small planter atop coffee table books or on a shelf.  Some of my favorites are below.

1) Greenside Antlers Planter from Anthropologie 2) Seamed Sun Planter from Anthropologie 3) Set of three Pinapple Air Plants inside Sea Urchins from Peacocktaco
